Transport Canada is not conducting a study on seatbelt safety in school buses, contrary to suggestions from Ontario government officials.

There have been hundreds of tests and studies on the effectiveness of seat belts in school buses through out the years. I am of the personal opinion that school buses need seat belts. But then, I have a child that rides one every day. But the studies have shown over and over again that seat belts provide little to no benefit for buses, especially at their average speed. To add, seat belts make it much more difficult to get a whole bus load of kids out of the bus in an emergency or if the bus flips.
I have actually wondered many times why buses on the whole do not have seat belts? Maybe the thinking is that they can withstand impact from another vehicle, but I doubt. I see many frail or young people on the bus that will surely take a hard knock if the bus driver had to slam on brakes.
I think that school buses should have seat belts, providing that no evidence comes into play that proves that they have a detrimental effect during a crash.
I feel as it is law to have to wear a seat belt in a car, it makes good practice for a child to wear one for every journey they make.
If you start saying that they have to wear one only in certain vehicles, you may just find it harder to get your child to wear one when they have to!
