These shows are done to place the audience into the time they are viewing as much as can be done. Chicken Turkey ect would be ate. Knives with the big thing that would have been used to eat with. Also he idea is just to have a tad of fun.
I would love to learn the art of fighting with the weapons back then and may once the boys are bigger though it is expensive as a hobby.

I visited the Medieval Times show in Myrtle Beach last year and it was good family fun. The food was okay and be prepared for the merchants (think Disney renaissance). It was the show that made it all worthwhile. The riders were really talented and the stunts were nice and thrilling. They use a wide range of weaponry from the lance to swords, from maces to flails and axes. There's pageantry. There's even a bit of story line, love and revenge. Audience participation is key in terms of rooting for your knight by cheering, stomping feet, banging on the table, hissing at opponents. Our group did a little 21st century wave, which I'm sure helped disorient any opposing colors and gave ours the advantage.
Sound like it was a great show much better then what I have seen. I do agree these people are greatly talented and need recognition for their effort. You can not fake picking up a 3 inch ring at a full gallop on a horse.

Carve a wooden sword and pad it if you must gives better weight and feel. I have not done it yet but my sons have two made in Japan Samaria trainer swords and the feel very real.

No No No you do not control your shots. You take every opportunity to strike your opponent when ever they leave a opening. You learn to protect yourself when you get hit often.
Someday I hope to be good enough or train someone to be good enough that they can be a part of these medieval games that people pay so much to go see.
