DRUG DEALERS PAY TAX UNDER SECRECY

Drug dealers are paying tax to "legitimise their income" and claim accident compensation, but the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) is legally prevented from passing incriminating details to police.

As far as I am concerned they are already secretly in government and operate under the guise of the police, the judiciary, etc. so what is new? I do not know what they hope to achieve by secretly paying tax though since one must have records to verify tax paid, but I can see it now...

In the US, various sorts of criminals frequently get sent to prison on the charge of "tax evasion". That is, it is obvious that they have money, but they haven't paid taxes on that money.

Well, if they pay taxes on it, then they can't be charged with tax evasion, can they?

Yes, but doesn't the US require you to show how you earned that money in the form of receipts / bookkeeping? If so, then how does paying tax help that if you cannot prove that you are paying ALL the tax you should be?

That's what money laundering is all about. The only thing I know about that is from movies, but it makes sense that a criminal, if he can show legitimate business interests, and the money ultimately goes through those legitimate businesses, and they pay the taxes on that money, then they can't be charged with tax evasion.

Perhaps that is what is happening in New Zealand.

Well, the fact that they are publishing a report on it means that the government or at least someone is not buying it - in other words - you do not fool us. Realistically, if you do the math it is easy to catch someone. For instance, if your business earns you a profit of $1000 a month after expenses, but you are driving a BMW and live in a wealthy area then something is wrong. A business will literally have to be making millions in profits for the drug money to disappear into the loop. Maybe that is why the government officials are always involved - they are part of the magical act.
