Interesting! And violent crime with weapons has not totally taken hold of the country. Many in the US who oppose guns should read this article. It sounds like New Zealand has its stuff together!

spock.gif You are kidding right? Do a Search for "New Zealand" and you will see that it is not one of the brighter spots in the world right now. Some of the most brutal crimes you can imagine are also recorded in the Heinous Crimes Board. I would dare say that if everyone is becoming gun conscious it is because they are thinking of protection.

I meant this more as a statement about making guns illegal. Legality or illegality will not stop violent crime. The person about to commit a violent/heinous crime does not stop to think about the availability of guns and let that be the determining factor of their actions. In the US, there are many who want to take gun rights away. In NZ, this does not seem to be a problem for their government. In their culture it does not seem to have made them the murder capital of the world. The percentage of the population that has weapons seems to be quite significant (even more so than the US), but yet they are far lower in the Murder by Weapons rate.

If the availability or ownership levels increase violent/heinous crime, why hasn't NZ exceeded the US in Murders per Capita?

Switzerland is totally swimming with weapons. They carry them around and they are easy to get, but violent/heinous crimes are not at the top of the chart. I was kind of taken aback when I went to Switzerland and saw ordinary people toting rifles about and heading off the ranges or hunting.

If more people in New Zealand are electing to obtain weapons for their security, then good on them. Their country seems to allow that response. For those in New Zealand that think they might not get shot while commiting their violent/heinous crimes, watch your backs. And as a side note: Those in the US reporting on the effects of weapons on crime rates, quit hiding the Switzerlands and New Zealands of the world.

In the Politics & Activism Board there are more in depth Threads about guns and gun ownership, but the point of why this Thread is in the Military Board is because New Zealanders are not just going after any old gun - no - they want military style weapons!
