Understanding your opponent's modus operandi in terms of their strategies is key to constructing a strategy of your own that will be effective in both diplomatic approach and\or battlefield performance.
I have discovered that even in the greatest defeat, the losers of the battle have every opportunity to understand how and why the defeat occurred. If nothing else, knowledge of the enemy's greatest strengths and possible weaknesses gives the defeated party a place to start the rebuilding process in terms of constructing a new military base and allows the strategists to create a new approach in future battles.
