Moving Back In With Parents

Through his early 20s, he roomed with his buddies in different apartments, splitting the cost of living four ways. But last February, nearly eight years after moving out, his relationship with a live-in girlfriend ended. Eric needed an affordable place to stay while putting himself through graduate school on his salary as a special education teacher.

This is obviously a cultural issue. Back home in Argentina, it is common and expected that single women and men live with their parents...that's how it is regardless the fact the guy may be 20 or 30, nobody makes a fuss over it as long as they are working and contributing to the family finances.

Quite frankly, I don't see anything wrong with moving back in with your parents. For economical reasons, it makes perfect sense to me. However, it must be a mutual decision though. Both the parents and the offspring should regard this decision (of returning home) as a temporary solution, until his/her financial situation improves. The parents need to be understanding and supportive of their offspring's decision and acknowledge it, as a way of achieving his/her goals. In addition to this, they should not condemn or dismiss their offspring as failures. Of course, certain rules and regulations should be implemented (for example, offspring should do chores or contribute towards food, electricity), to ensure that the offspring does not take advantage of his/her parents financially.

Parents In Moving

It was kind of expected of me to move back home!
After my tour of duty in SE Asia in the Marine Corps, I did not have a job lined up immediately so I moved back home and my parents enjoyed my stay but I tried to tell them it was only short time! I ended up staying 10 years off and on when my father moved back to T&T for awhile. My American friends were telling me I was spoiled but what the heck?
Some of them said their parents were ready to kick them out of the house by 18 years and 1 day. It depends on the cultural imperative or family committment of those concerned.

Yes I am a mama's boy! jaja

I think it can be a positive thing, for single people to move back in with their families, as long as it does not impede with them being productive in life, as in saying the parents are not enabling them to not advance in life.

A lot of american families are not that way.

My family is once you are out.. you are out. You can stay until you are 18, or are attending college/university, then you must pay rent, but once you are out that door there is no return.

I believe it is fine, but there has to be some ground rules.

If an adult returns to live with the Family, the owner of the house has the right to set some rules. The Owner can forbid certain activities or ask certain things of the son or Daughter.

1. If the Family has certain Moral views, such as no intimate relations between the single person and another person inside the house, the Owner of the house has every right to make that rule and enforce it by not allowing the person to live there.

2. If the person returning makes any complaints about cooking or the state of the house the Parent has a right to kick him or her out.

3. The Parent can at any time ask the Single adult to pay for a portion of expenses of the house and the Single person really should have no grounds for refusing these requests.

4. The Parent has the right to set up certain ground rules such as no parties, no drinking (If the parent is against it), no smoking, and any rule they deem important to the running of the house. The Adult child really has no grounds to dispute these rules. If they do there are other options besides returning to the house

5. The Parent can ignore every thing that I have listed above and let the Single child do what ever they want (I am not sure why they would)

The house is not the single person's house, and they need to follow the rules of the house regardless of their age or find another living arrangement.

Moving In Parents

Well, I have moved back a couple of times. I don't really like to move back, but it was necessary. I don't see nothing wrong with it though....

I don't see a problem with it. So long as there is responsibility as a tenant, as opposed to a free loader.
