Can A Psychologist Know

Most humans rely on a Psychologist to help them understand themselves, discover suppressed memories or reach further plateaus. However, do you feel in this discovery or journey with your Psychologist it is possible for him / her to know you better than you know yourself?

I do, to an extent. Psychologists are trained to understand human behavior, and can more easily identify traits and characteristics that are common - and even uncommon - in the general population. Most of us as lay people don't understand these, having never studied the topic.

And, of course, it's hard to be objective when we consider ourselves and our behavior. It's much easier to see the mote in thy brother's eye than the beam in thine own.

Oh yes, I do. Sometimes we think we know ourselves but our behavior does not match our opinion about ourselves.

I did therapy in the past and the psychologist was right 100%, she even gave me certain opinions about people in my life that I never thought about. She told me about someone that I lived with almost all my life and she was 100% right based on the behavior of that person, she told me a lot of things about myself too that I never saw as an issue.

The interesting thing about this is that a Psychologist can only fully realize who you are based on what you chose to say or should I say what information you choose to reveal. In other words, if you are honest in the session then the Psychologist will be able to gather true notes. I believe someone who is very manipulative or should I say - an excellent actor could probably try to paint a portrait that is not really himself. I believe it all depends on the level of professionalism / experience of the Psychologist as well as the intent of the one going for the session(s).
