LAHORE, Pakistan - A Pakistani woman who won international fame but irked the government for speaking out about her gang rape left for the United States on Saturday to receive an award for her courage.

Mukhtar Mai, 36, has been declared Woman of the Year 2005 by Glamour, an American women's magazine. She's due to receive the award with a $20,000 cash prize Nov. 2 in New York.

I don't think that award could have found a more deserving recipiant. That took more courage than I'm sure I would have had in a culture that does not really hold a woman's rights a priority. I hope things continue to work out for her. The case is still in review by the Pakinstani Supreme Court. I hope they rule in her favor. It's a crime to allow things of that nature to go on without doing anything to stop it.
