Should the crew of ships carry guns as a routein part of sailing the seas?

Arming ships opens a can of worms, owners say

The reason is twofold: Owners fear pirates would be more likely to continue shooting once on board if they confronted weapons, and the company might be held liable for deaths or injuries inflicted by someone on the vessel. Ref. Source 3

I think that arming ship crews is not the right way to go. If you want to go after pirates then put some navy after them. We may not catch them now or next week but we will get them.

I believe the pilot of a plane does carry a gun right? I don't see why a ship is any different.

Not all pilots carry guns. I do not think all pilots want to carry guns. We can arm the ships captains but still not arm the ships.

No, I wouldn't arm a commercial vessel, but I would arm the crew. Pressure hoses make a good weapon!
