Is Trim & Mouldings (Molding) purely for cosmetics in a home or is there a more practical use?

Mostly cosmetic though an unfinished edge can be more susceptible to damage due to knock and bumps. Think of a baseboard and children playing. The baseboard takes all the knocks and prevents the drywall from breaking.

While most of it is just to make your home look good it can be useful for other things too. Like Krakyn advised it can save a wall, a doorway or a window edge from damage. It can [rove to be functional too by placing a picture or other hanging on or above it. The edges can be a great place to anchor decorations to in the celebration of holidays or other special occasions.
