No Spare Fuel On Planes
WASHINGTON - Airlines have reduced the amount of spare fuel on airplanes in a money-saving effort that is raising concerns among some pilots and a government watchdog. Less fuel on planes increases the likelihood of diverted flights because planes can't circle for as long over airports when a landing is delayed, according to more than 20 pilots who filed complaints in the past year with NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System. The reporting system collects complaints from pilots and others and keeps their identities secret.

In emergency situation the plane with the emergency has priority. Then it goes back to normal order. Hopefully they still have enough fuel to be able to circle if a emergency is or has occurred. Otherwise they will have to divert to their nearest airport. Thus making airline delays go up.
This just stinks of a few hundred dieing to prove the results are conclusive.
If they are allowed to reduce fuel they should not be allowed to increase the number of passengers. Thus they can fly at the higher altitudes and burn less fuel which will decrease operating costs and increase profits safely. I am sure numbers can be done to see where the the line balances on a slight increase of number vs the amount of fuel reduced.
I can see the airlines reducing fuel buy 50 tons and increasing the passenger with baggage by the same thus now running a very fine line in the safety margin for circling times.
Of course though this is just me being a paranoid liberal as we all know the airline cares more about us then its profits.
