Immortality

Only one person in two billion will live to be 116 or older. Most people believe that there is some way for them to extend life - pills, oxygen chambers, etc. In history many men believed that drinking water from certain pools or rivers could prolong life. What do you believe - is it possible to extend life beyond the normal? Do you believe that there are people among us that are much older than they appear to be - 100's of years old?

Well, religiously speaking, I believe that there are at least four people running around who are about two thousand years old.

It's interesting to think about that possibly someone might be much older than they appear, preserved through some artificial means. I wouldn't say it's impossible. I believe that there are a lot of things in this world that we don't understand, things we aren't even aware of. So I would say that it's a very good possibility.

Now my question would be: Why would anyone want to live that long? Seems strange to me. But I guess to each their own.

Well, for one thing, imagine how many modules you could get through on a good RPG? And think of the character level you could reach! wink.gif

I don't believe there are any "magic" potions or pills or fountains or any other earthly concotion that can cause/bring on/induce/stimulate immortality. (gotta be real careful with the "T" usage in that word wink.gif )

It's interesting to me that people are so afraid of death that they will go to great lengths to find something to make them live "forever." I believe that we are here for a purpose, and to then progress beyond death. I heard/read somewhere recently that death is an illusion, anyway. smile.gif

Everybody has to die someday, I understand why some people will want to live longer, sometimes it seems like the time flies and you have not done nothing much of your life, that's why we always hear that we should not waste our days, we should use them wisely. In my opinion those who live long years could be for two reasons:

1. They have not accomplished yet what maybe was expected from them.

2. They have such a level of wisdom that God allows them to stay on Earth even longer to reach a certain level and then move to the next one.

Although I believe a healthy live may prolong your days, there is no way a man can extend their days just so or become immortal.

I am not afraid to die, but I would love to live for hundreds of years. Especially if I never looked older than say 50. Of course, it goes without saying that I would want Paul to live just as long. Immortality would be very boring alone. The reason I would like to live so long is to see what the future has in store for us. What marvelous things will be invented in the next century alone. During the 60's we thought we'd have floating cities in the sky and hovercars like the Jetson's. Well there are no floating cities and I am still waiting for my hovercar. As long as I could remain healthy and be able to travel around I would live forever if I could.

The very idea of immortality sickens me. Take a look at the medicare and social security crises that we have in the United States. Were the Baby Boomers to live an extra ten, twenty, or infinite number of years, the strain on the rest of the populace to support them would be devastating. Now, add another factor to the equation. Birth control is being widely used. Not that I am against it, but population rates are decreasing world wide. In fact some places populations are actually declining. So, declining births, along with medicine that prolongs life equals problems for the people burdened with taking care of the elderly. . . . My arguement is off the cuff and not all that well written, I appologize.

Not necessarily so. As our life expectancy has increased in the US, Congress has raised the age at which one can retire and fully collect Social Security. I imagine, if life expectancy continues to increase this will continue to be the practice. There is no reason any society needs to keep 65 as the age of retirement. If you live in a society where life expectancy is 100, then retirement age should be much higher as well.

I want to live as many years as I possibly can. It has nothing to do with a lack of faith, but in fact more to do with having faith. I believe the longer I live, the more I can do with the life I have been given.
