What a sad story, and so close to Christmas. What is more sad is if he just waited with his family he would have been alive today, but I am sure his manly instincts centered around doing something to save his loved ones.
This also shows the importance of having the necessary items for a journey: communication equipment (simple as a cell phone), beacon, extra food, blankets, water, very good directions / map skills, etc.
