HOLIDAY GIFT RETURNS: STILL NOTHING EASY ABOUT IT

If you're dreading your aunt's gift again this year, here's what you should do to ensure a seamless return - don't open it, don't shake it and definitely don't kick it around.

It seems like it is being made harder also for the genuine person to be returning unwanted items. Lets face it, we all know that there are people who do this all the time to 'cash in', but on the whole I'd say that they are the minority, not the majority!
I've not heard of this re-stocking fee before, and hopefully it will never be introduced in England.
On the whole though, I feel that if you're not happy with something, or it doesn't fit, you should be entitled to a refund or exchange, the stores are certainly quick enough to take your cash off you!

Some people actually include the receipt with the gift in case the receiver wants to exchange it - I have never done that, but in a way it is thoughtful.

Returns Gift Holiday

Many stores now will actually print a separate "gift receipt" with no dollar amount on it to include with your gift in the event it should be returned. Of course, if it's returned, the amount will be credited to a "gift card" (all the rage here these days) to be used only in that store.

I think it's a good idea, especially in the case of "weekend wardrobe" and electronics.

While I understand the reasoning behind the restocking fee for opened electronics, still my husband and I were shocked when we opened the box of our camcorder bought from Best Buy and saw a sticker that said they would charge the 15% fee for its return if opened. For one thing, no one at the store informed us of this policy and we had never heard of it. For another, what if the camera was damaged or malfunctioning from the time it was opened? There would be no way to know this without opening it and trying it out. And if that had been the case, we wouldn't have been able to return it without being charged at least $40. Fortunately it worked fine. We have other problems with Best Buy, but that is another story.

I love gift receipts. Noone has to know if you decide to return their gift for one reason or another, and a gift receipt certainly makes it easier. We were able to return quite a few replicated or unneeded items that we received as wedding gifts, and because of this we were able to buy other things that we still needed, which was very nice. We were able to return things so easily in part because of gift receipts, and in part because some items were purchased from Wal-Mart, which I love because they make it so easy to return things. I just wish that the dishonest people would stop taking advantage of that ease, or else it will no longer be available. Anyway, we ended up with only a few un-returnable wedding repeats, but it was ok because we re-gifted them. We certainly didn't need two of the exact same spice rack or three hand mixers. The only thing we couldn't return or re-gift was a set of bathroom towels that didn't match our bathroom decor (plus we already had enough towels) and didn't have a receipt or tags.
