The camcorder I have is an ancestor of the one described as #6 in the list:

QUOTE
6 Hitachi DZ-GX3100 £450

This Hitachi records to small DVD discs that you can slip straight into most domestic players - no editing and no computer required. Its 15x zoom is better than average and you can even grab small still snaps.

I like it because I can record directly to DVD discs and then play these in my DVD player. The biggest problem is finding the discs for them. I have had to find an online store and order some in bulk.

I have been considering getting a camcorder for vacation this summer, but didn't want to get one that didn't record to disc. I don't have a vcr anymore and only use disc. Its much easier to record straight to disc that to convert to disc. However, some dvd recorders have issues recording off of the tv and "lose" the date. It that is a problem then camcorders burning to disc will be useless to me.

The model I have (Hitachi DZ-MV200A) records to mini disc and maintains the time and date. It is pretty handy to have around, especially now that everything has shifted to DVD players.

Camcorders Ten

I am digging into this this month like to buy one before July. Two good suspects are the Hitachi DZ-HS 300A DVD solid state recorder. or the Panasonic SDR-H200 and is solid state.

As far as the disc issue they have low recording times With the solid state I can burn directly to my dvd any how and use full size dvd's. The dual is interesting as at least you have two sources if one crashes.

The biggest concern I have is do they work half descent as a camera. My digital camera is on its way to a slow lingering death so it would be nice to buy one that would do both. I am not into photography I like a point and shoot but need to know that the light levels are not going to make all my pictures look like they were done in smoke filled rooms.

Reviews are great but personal experience with the equipment is even better.

I am looking into buying a camcorder that uses digital recording instead of tape recording Recording directly to a dvd or mini dvd is a good thing too. I like these reviews but consumer reports is what I refer to a lot since they get a lot of their facts from actual customers or their actual testing.

malexander how do you find your camera works in low light levels? Does it had inputs or external mic light ect? I am really hoping to find one that will take stills also with decent results. I have a cheap PH 3.1 mp camera now it is ok but far distance is bad light drops too much. If I can get as good as this or slightly better with the camcorder I would be happy.

Might just buy a good mini disc one and a camera but just seems silly have to carry both.

I bought a nice digital camera that works as a camcorder too. It is a kodak easy shot 5.0 mp digital camera that has a setting for low light or night vision. I have used it as a digital camcorder since it records both sight and sound. Using a 1GB and a 2GB card I find I can record a few minutes of video.
