Study: Drivers Living Near Church Safest

Living by a church does wonders for a person's driving record, but motorists who reside near a restaurant might want to say an extra prayer before hitting the road, according to the findings of an insurance industry study.

Now that I have to say is original. So basically if I figured this out correctly, since I live just 2 blocks from a school I am more likely to have a wreck than someone that lives near a church or a liquor store. I believe that to be completely stupid. I consider this, they say most accident happen within a mile from your home, so I guess this is why it is looked upon this way. I have a problem with that. Like 76% of all wrecks I believe are just minor fender benders if I remember correctly. I'm sorry I do not have any studies to support that, but I want to believe that I have read that in the past. I drive for a living, and I drive in a lot of different areas and neighborhoods that I do not live in as well as a lot of different traffic situations. I have only had one wreck since I started driving and it was less than $600.00 worth of damage. In my defence, the lady I hit stopped horizontally in the lane of traffic while trying to cut across to another parking lot. My insurance I feel is more than high enough before we even consider that I live near a school. Anyone else have any comments? I am really quite interested.

I have to agree with you Bwren. I think it is very unfair people should have their insurance based on where they live. Some people can only afford to live in certain suburbs, while others might prefer aspects of their area.

Why should two adults of similar age and driving record pay different rates because one was a parent who wanted to live near their child's school, while the other lived in a 'safe' area. How can this method determine how safe one driver is from another?

At the end of the day a good driver is less likely to have accidents then a bad driver. If they want to discriminate, make both take an advanced driving test to determine the likelihood of an accident.

To me this method sounds like a desperate attempt by an insurance company to raise their fees. What do others think?

The article has since expired, but if I understand what has been said already, I would agree that forcing someone to pay higher insurance based on where they live is ludicrous. I can understand higher premiums for young people and of course if you've been in accidents before.
I currently live right across from a local high school, and I have not gotten into one accident the 6 years I've lived here. Maybe that is because I am a safe driver, but it doesn't mean I should pay a higher premium because the probability is higher. I agree with arvhic that this just seems a ploy to raise insurance premiums.
