Homemade Birthday Party
Go to most children's birthday parties and the resulting scene can be pretty scary. There's enough wrapping paper and cardboard left over to fill a good chunk of a landfill. Never mind the mad rush to Rite Aid to get 72 AA batteries. Jennifer Danzig, Aidan's mom, said she went to a birthday party for a friend's child and it turned her off.

I think there is a middle road here. It is not good to overindulge kids. But you do need to let them be kids. I have seen some parents who give their children birthday parties. The gifts are opened and played with. Then the kids make some choices - they can choose some old toys or some of the new ones to give to charity. But they have rule that when something new comes into the house, something old goes. This teaches the children that it is not all about the accumulation of things and that they can make a difference by sharing what they have with someone less fortunate.
I agree all that wrapping paper and cardboard from the toy containers is terrible. Our policy is we say to all parents do not feel that you have to give they already have enough. Just come and enjoy the fun. We did mini golf last time was tons of fun.
I never feel it is ok to tell any one no you can not give my child something. We do how ever tell the boys it is a part to have friends at it is not about getting gifts. Our boys are meticulous in the care of their items ad they are passed along to any we know that can use them. They both have one or two item that they really like so we place them in a shelf in the room as they are now a keep sake. Funny pat is they seem to change often and the others disappear to friends of theirs.
