There are not racist words. There are racist people and racist prejudices.
That being said, in the same context, if a black person uses the word nigger and it is acceptable, it MUST be acceptable also if the person is white.
Otherwise, it's a form of xenophobia.
Are we all blind? I can call you "nigga" 'cause I'm black, but you can't 'cause you're white? If this is not racism, what is it?
The honest truth is, words mean different things in different situations. The kid might not mind being called nigger by his friends (same age, no matter what race), but by his teacher, of anybody else that isn't close to him can be harmful to his feelings.
It's not about racism, it's about different ages and social differences. If a friend of his calls him stupid he might laugh and don't care. But if someone older does that, it might offend him greatly.
But, in my opinion it's just not acceptable that the kid thinks that the right thing to do is to put the teacher out of job, due to that one mistake. After all that says a lot about the child's feelings..that young and already unable to forgive and forget? What about when he gets older...
Kriptonis, I disagree. Just because SOME African Americans by choice choose to use the word with each other does not mean, every single African American is okay with the term and its use, we should respect that and keep that in mind. The teacher should be out of the job simply because he does not see anything wrong with what he said hence he is just trying to justify and rationalize a term, that socially (we all know) is unacceptable.
I honestly feel sorry for the guy. Call my nieve, but I don't think he is prejudiced, just stupid. Maybe I shouldn't say stupid but he didn't use much common sense in this situation. I would bet that in this particular school the term is commonplace and it was a slip of his tongue, just as he stated. Still, if he isn't smart enough to know that as a white teacher he shouldn't have used this term, he deserves the suspension.
