This is an archived article, about something that happened in England a year ago. I hope that the article will be readily available for a long time.
This story illustrates, for me, some basic principles that most of us overlook when we discuss personal protection, violence, gun control, and a lot of other subjects.
1. When there are violent criminals around, reason doesn't help much. You can't reason with a rapist or a mugger.
2. If you don't know how to protect yourself, you are "prey" to the "predators" and an easy target, at that.
3. If you don't have a WAY to protect yourself, you are out of luck when it comes to asocial violence.
4. The time to decide to protect yourself, and learn how to do it, is long BEFORE it become necessary.
5. Removing one type of weapon from the predator (gun, sword, club, etc.) has no effect on asocial violence. Violent criminals will find some way to do what their monstrous nature urges them to do.
This man did everything that the police (who are completely unable to protect people) urge people to do - give the criminal everything he asks for. He was still murdered.
