Canadian Spy Coins
A report that that some Canadian coins have been compromised by secretly embedded spy transmitters is overblown, according to a U.S. official familiar with the case. [..] He said that while some odd-looking Canadian coins briefly triggered suspicions in the United States, he said that the fears proved groundless: "We have no evidence to indicate anything connected with these coins poses a risk or danger."

Even if this were true, why would anyone want these coins to have transmitters? Is it a survey? A hobby? Or perhaps they want to locate something? How can you locate something if there are 1000's all over the place - what would be the purpose? I mean no one in the US is going to spend a Canadian coin - they will all end up in a jar or some drawer if not the Exchange.

If the Canadian government actually has spies (and the probably do), there is at least a few of them in the US. Everyone spies on everyone else. I look at it as the price of doing business.
The US and Russia are the closest countries to Canada and you can bet they have a interest on what is going on and what are the intentions on the lands near the boarder and simply trade in general. It would be important for Canada to know what might be going on environmentally in the US Capital. What laws might be coming up or what constructions near the border may affect their people.
As far as the coins go, I haven't the slightest idea what benefit they would be.
