I'm not sure whether it just drowns the smell out, but my friend swears by it, and as she uses a very 'heavy duty smelling' fabric conditioner, she says it brings out the best even in her hubbys very smelly workman's clothes. She reckons that as long as the material hasn't got any mildew or mould on it, it's a good method to use.
I don't know, as I haven't had to use loads of the stuff, but I do know that the smell of the fabric conditioner doesn't wear off that easily from their clothes.
Maybe as suggested earlier the tumble drier bounce sheets combined with above might work better.
Sorry I don't know any more to help, but hope you find a solution!
Well if it works for workman's clothes then I may give it a go. I should clarify that the kind of smell I am trying to rid from my clothes is the drenched wet sweat that comes after two and a half hours of hard core basketball, so you can imagine.
JB, you need to clarify to these good folks that ONLY when you go out to play Basketball you get your shirts smelling like that because of the constant physical activity but you do not have that problem with every day clothing.
In my opinion, as soon as you reach those clothes should be thrown into deep boiling water with normal soap. Also I read that you should use a deodorant containing aluminium or zinc. Both of these metals will kill off the bacteria on your underarm skin.
Update: I just saw that you clarified the problem. *smile*

Sunshine also kills bacteria and other creepy crawlies. My mom puts her sneakers out in the sun after she washes them to kill any fungus growing in them. A friend of mine received some donated clothing that *reeked* of cigarette smoke. She washed them and hung them out in the sun for a couple of days and they were fine. I've never tried the sunshine treatment for sweat odors, but it's worth a try
