It seems Obama is now the frontrunner in this fascinating two horse race for next US President. Sorry McCain, but the reality is a Democrat will win.
I would like to know who people would vote if given the choice between Obama and Clinton, and the reasons why. I understand there are a lot of Republican voters here, so try to choose the lesser of the two evils.
They've both run different strategies and it seems Obama is receiving more support overall. It seems there is quite a racial divide between minority groups, which is also interesting.
From what I can gather, Hillary is running a very cynical campaign while Obama seems more positive. I personally hope Obama wins because he comes across as more dynamic and positive, far less populist. He is also against war in principle, which bodes well for the rest of th world. I also don't like the manner in which Hillary is using Bill's popularity. Will he also call the shots if she is elected?
Rather off topic, but... I have also noticed a couple of posters aren't happy about Obama's stance on abortion. Can someone please explain to me why abortion is such an important issue in US politics and especially when choosing a president? I don't know any other country where this issue receives so much milleage. I can't understand what it has to do with being a good leader. |

Obama Wins
WASHINGTON (AP) - Barack Obama has won Virginia's Democratic primary, defeating Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama is also hoping to capture first place in Tuesday's Democratic primaries in Maryland and the District of Columbia. Republicans are voting, too, with Mike Huckabee making an unexpectedly strong challenge to John McCain in Virginia. The Associated Press made its Democratic call based on surveys of voters as they left the polls.

I think he's doing better than Jesse Jackson did right? If he beats Hillary then this will mean he is the first African American to run one on one for president.

This really should look like deja vu for Hillary, because this same kind of love affair with the media and the people happened to her husband when he first ran for the presidency. Hillary cannot help but to run negatively...it is what she does. She has never come across as a loving, nurturing or caring individual and that is part of her problem...not to mention truthfulness. If he doesn't get the nomination, he should kick himself for not starting to attack Hillary sooner. After he started to challenge her and better define himself (although he really hasn't defined too much other than hope and a new America), his numbers took off and his confidence in front of the camera has just continued to grow after his initial stumbles. This guy is charasmatic just like Bill and Hillary just doesnt have "it".
Now it is unfortunate that in America it is more important on how you look and present yourself on TV even more so than the content of your message in how we vote for a president, but it is true.
Honestly, if it was Hillary vs McCain, I really think McCain would win. Hillary just has too many negatives and if you want someone that will bring both parties together...McCain's record is better than anyones. However, a Obama vs McCain race is going to be REALLY close. There are a lot of racist people that will not vote for Obama because of his skin color. I hate to say that but it is none the less true. However, if he continues to dazzle the critics and pull an ever increasing number of women voters to his rhetoric, then I think he will be the president. McCain absolutely has to focus on not blowing up at some point. His temper is famous and he cannot let it sink him again. He also needs to seriously make Huckabee (or Brownback - a true conservative/religious right) his VP choice to ensure that the conservative base of the republican party will actually vote for him.
Roe vs Wade has been a landmark decision on abortion which differentiates republicans and democrats. The religious right is very much against abortion and the liberal left is very much for abortion. Since the president has the ability to appoint supreme court justices, this is a very important thing to consider when selecting a president if it means anything to you. For many in the US, this is a important factor. It is not just abortion, but many of the key moral and ethical issues that will be ruled upon by our supreme court. Also, there are several judges that are likely to step down in the not too distant future and this is why it means so much to people. The supreme court had been primarily liberal (and the one that ok'd abortion) until Regan and Bush started to bring the court back into balance with some conservative or conservative/moderate appointments. The court is in danger of becoming conservative again (some say it already is and worry about a possible repeal of abortion rights) if McCain is elected and any of the justices step down. So this has less to do with them being a good leader rather than them having the ability to appoint someone to a lifetime job that grooms the moral and ethical issues that they will be asked to rule on.
Obama or Hillary? Actually, Hillary has tried as hard as she can not to run a negative campaign, but it is her/Bill's fall back position when things dont work the way they want them to. I think that Bill has actually been a negative for her at times with his desire to swim in the spotlight and lecture the media on honest/ethical work (seems a bit hypocritical to me at times). I also think that it really is starting to hit people that he could end up being 1st lady and that is a bit frightening to a few of us. If he had enough spare time as president to "not have sexual relations with that woman", then imagine all the fun he is going to cause as 1st lady! Not a pretty picture. Also, he would make the VP about useless as I am sure Bill would get dispatched to most places, so I am sure that VP will not be a desireable job in the Hillary White House. Obama is a "rock star". He has all the words and says them correctly and makes us feel good, but can he really get it done? Is Chicago a better place because of him? Not really. If a terrorist bombed something in the US under a Hillary White House, I would say "Lord Help Those Terrorist, Because Hillary will have her Revenge". They are both fiscal liberals, so that doesn't do anything for me in general. If I had to vote between the two of them, I would say that Hillary (as she says) is more ready to do the job right now, but I am interested in seeing what Obama can do. I would vote for him, because I have the feeling that I will get the opportunity to vote for Hillary again in 4 years, so let's see what he can do.
The race is not over by a long shot. The democrats are not guaranteed a seat at the White House. If Obama takes the nomination, who is his VP? Certainly, it will not be Hillary. Edwards? Yeah, probably. So does Hillary then get behind Obama after that bitter battle? He will need all the Democrats to get out and vote for him if he gets the nomination. If so, how does she do it convincingly and with grace...honesty has been a issue and she is definitely not accustomed to losing? The VP with a Obama election is pretty important, because he would be the first black president and there are a few in the US that might not take well to that, so the VP nominee is a important decision. If this nomination gets much more dirtier (and I think it will...SOON), there is going to be a lot of bad blood in the democratic party and that could make for a republican victory.
There is one thing for sure. Charisma trumps all in presidential elections and Obama has it.

I learned something interesting about Barack Obama today... it seems like he is addicted to smoking and has been recently trying to quit by chewing Nicoret(?) gum. Does knowing that affect your vote in any way?

Having once been addicted to smoking myself, I don't view this as a big negative. However, it is a negative and he probably should quit. If he can't quit smoking, what else can he not control?
Regarding his "dress up" photos - politicians do lots of things like that. I don't understand the whole buzz over that one.
