Chris Cakes

I was watching a clip on the Food Network about Chris Cakes - they make pancakes and flip them to the customer. The customer then has to catch them, some are able to and some are not. Of course those who don't manage to catch the pancakes tossed towards them lose the food to the floor. In my observation - isn't that wastage? I could not help but think about people that are hungry at the soup kitchen that could probably use those.

Comments: The person that thinks that Chris Cakes might be wasting food doesn't know a lot about reality. Have you looked at any dumpsters behind a restaurant or public school? At all of our events, we make the batter as we go and at the end of the day, there is VERY little waste. By percentage, it would be about 15% of the waste of a normal restaurant!

What does that supposed to mean? Dumpsters? I am sitting there watching a clip on the Food Network where a pancake maker flips a pancake to someone and they drop it on the floor, everyone laughs. I see nothing funny about it. If you think that is funny then you do not know the reality of hunger.

What does that mean? It's 15% so its fine to waste food? Why not just put the pancake on the people's plate and make it 0 percent Or have a professional catcher.

I think you are missing the point JB was trying to make. I saw the show as well and I did not find humorous seeing food in the floor, do you think that's funny? I guess having lived most of my life in third world countries where hunger is a reality for many and not for a few, I have a different appreciation about food.

I have seen this guy flipping pancakes at people. I think that any food that is thrown to the floor or thrown into a garbage can is very wasteful. Here in the USA we are a very wasteful country. The amount of food that is thrown out in a single day could feed a third world country for well over a week. To listen to how many people are starving in this world and then you see dumpsters full of food that was just tossed because someone thought it was not cooked right? I hope that people come to realize that all of this waste can be curtailed and given to those who really need it.

I think what Joe Public was getting at is why attack they pancake house when other restaurants waste even more food then it does. I really hate to say this but I think he is right in comparison to the average restaurant they are wasting less food then most. This fact does not make the waste of any food in the pancake house acceptable just slightly less wasteful the the rest.

I worked two summers in a local restaurant when I was in High School. The man had two dogs that were mostly out doors fore security. He was spending a fortune on food for them. When I started I took him aside and told him to stop wasting his money just feed the dogs the table scraps. We filled 4 - 5 gallon pails each Saturday on breakfast alone. I have no idea how much more was gathered in the dinner and supper hours but he later told me he was feeding his two plus 5 more from the scraps. This was not a large restaurant by any means. The weekdays were much slower so food was frozen on occasion for the dogs.

In general in North America we are not starving hungry in places but over all most are very comfortable and well fed. There is a great amount of waste that would not have been seen here two generations ago when we lived more from the land. I try not to waste as I believe those that do one day will hunger for what they threw out.

The issue is left over cooked food in Canada can not be given to the hungry as if you do and some one becomes ill after eating it you loose your business. It now is also against municipal and provincial laws. We had and over abundance of geese one year the Hamilton mayor proposed to feed the soup kitchens with them. The poor had no issue with it but the local business shot it down saying the food would have been unfit to eat.

Krakyn, the answer is simple as to why 'Chris' or whomever applied as a guest named Chris is wrong based on the following points:

1. Does knowing someone out there is doing more wrong make a smaller wrong OK?

2. Is this Thread about US Restaurants wasting food or Chris Cakes wasting food?

3. Are other restaurants showing how they flip food to customers and is thrown on the floor while everyone laughs?

Lastly, I have worked in the food industry for awhile both in commercial and non-commercial as part of staff / management and I am fully aware of food wastage. However, I am not aware of ever seeing any person in the food business intentionally throwing food at a customer knowing fully well that there is a chance it will fall on the floor. Maybe a marketing tactic fine, wasteful in my opinion - very much so. As I said, if you want to make a 'show' of it hire someone professional to catch it and give the scrapings to the dogs or come up with a better idea and put the pancake on the customer's plate.

I also have the feeling the person maybe working for the establishment in question. You are correct a smaller wrong is still wrong. I also think a customer wasting the food is a different issue then the owner deliberately wasting it.

I think one point is to made who are we to judge the company if they are creating profit and able to provide more jobs for the area? Perhaps the overall good is better then the evil done. Just a side thought.

I was taught to waste nothing. I still curse soft metals in nails as they made them almost impossible to reuse once bent or pulled back out.
