Inmate faces additional 24 years in prison for claiming to have found hair in jail food

What I don't get about this story is: Even if he was the one that tampered with his own food, how come he can receive such a harsh sentence?

Comments: First of all he didn't get that sentence, there is a possibility he might but I don't think he will be given 24 years in prison, what he did was very wrong and should be punished accordingly.
