That is an interesting question JB, my wife's a religious studies major and off the top of her head she isn't sure.
This is a little bit of a tangent but it seems that violence is a result from the natural imbalance of societal equality. In order to protect oneself from the threat of a stronger person, the weaker seeks balance by the security of a weapon, but then the larger person gains a weapon, and so on, and so on...
I read this book when I was in junior high, for us it was required reading and it offers a lot of insight into human society it is called 'Harrison Bergeron' by Kurt Vonnegut.

Comments: I would like to say that my take on this matter is that we are given the responsibility to protect ourselves from evil. We as Christians, fathers, and husbands, and friends, should take whatever measures available to us to defend, first others then ourselves. I would gladly give my life for anyone else to live who might otherwise die. If arms were to be used against the innocent then it may be necessary to use arms to defend.
I work in an environment where many people are illegally armed and have, at times threatened to harm or kill one ro more of our group. WE are legally armed for defense and in the last 14 years have not had an incident that required us to discharge our weapons. This is fortunate but could change at any time and we must stay prepared to protect others and ourselves.
The evil is out there, the weapons used for evil are out there and if we refuse to defend others and ourselves we are allowing those who promote evil to prevail.
This is only my interpretation of what I believe the Bible tells us.
