I am a: Parent
Are their things that floa through your mind sometimes that make you on edge because you are a parent? For example, think of that time that you just remembered you left the knife near the counter shelf and baby was close by, or walking down the road and while crossing a street a crazy driver comes swerving by... I am sure you can think of many things. Most of them do not happen, but what about if they did?
From Deseret News:

I've got a parent's worst nightmare. My oldest daughter was probably two years old and it was in the winter time. The place that we were living in, at the time, had a one of those wall gas heaters. Anyway, everyone that would come over to my house would stand infront of the heater to warm up. I had been telling her to not stand so close to the heater, because she could get burned. (Only at that time, she was talking quite a bit, but used the words 'that would burn baby'). I had just put my daughter's brand new coat on her and clasped the hood on her head. As I was putting on my coat, she was standing infront of the heater again. No sooner than I got the words out of my mouth, 'that will burn baby', the outside lining of her coat caught on fire!
At that moment, time seemed to slow down. She was only an arm reach from me, but it seemed like every move I did at that point seemed to take an eternity. I picked up her blanket and threw it over her and rolled her on the floor. She was crying and screaming. I was horrified!
It didn't take but just a minute or two to put out her coat. The only thing that saved her hair and body from burning, was the fact that the coat had a fire retardant inner lining. So only the outer lining burned.
I was very lucky that day. God was there to give me the strength to keep my thoughts clear to put out my daughter's coat. Other than the fact that she was scared to death, she was ok.
I think I had the same kind of heater, only when I turned, my baby touched the heater and burned his hand. He had been born in January, so was just a baby when the heater was on last. He did this when he was about 9-10 months old, on the first day the heater was turned on. I never even thought of the danger, as I had never touched the heater myself. I felt so bad, and was crying as much as he did with the burn. I am a nurse, so I knew enough to put cold on the hand and take him to his doctor ASAP. He is fine now, and 9 years old, but boy-o-boy, you can try to protect them, but things can still happen. My youngest fell at the park, while trying to keep up with his brother. He fell and hit his teeth on a climbing structure. Broke two teeth and damaged the permanent teeth underneath that wouldnt 'even show for another 3+ years. All we can do is *try* to predict the dangers (even to crawl around on the floor and try to see what kind of trouble a baby/toddler can get into or review possible kidnapping scenarios when they are school aged and more on their own), prepare our kids the best we can, and trust that the world is a good place.
When my baby was born he had very log nails, and after a couple of months I decided I would cut his nails very carefully because he was scratching himself...I did it as carefully as I could but a couple of them started bleeding a lil bit...oh gosh...I thought I was going crazy, I cried a lot and told my husband about it and he just said just be a bit more careful next time, I remember kissing over and over my baby and saying sorry lol...it was nothing serious but it really scare me off!
My 6 y/o son is a special needs child. He has hypotonia (low muscle tone), high mitochondria (too involved to explain here), ADHD, developmental delays, seizures, a bruising problem, the occasional bout of asthma, and a fuuuuun milk/dairy allergy. My scary stories with him start literally from the day he was born (both my boys were delivered emergency C-section).
He's had his share of "normal" scraped knees and whatnot. Last year, however, he broke his heel bone at a special needs families picnic from falling off some play equipment. A few months ago his 3 y/o brother whacked him on the head with a Playstation controller and left a 1/2" gash in his scalp. Thankfully, he didn't need stitches. Time will only tell what else may happen, but I believe both my boys have guardian angels watching over them most of the time.
Our youngest Son a few months ago scared the living daylights out of me!
I was sitting in our living room late one evening, when I heard a clicking sound, which bearing in mind with all the noise in our house isn't really anything too unusual, good job I went to check it out, because he was sleepwalking and had undone the front door and was in the middle of walking off up the path in his pyjamas!
Boy, our house is fully 'secure' now , It didn't bear thinking about if I hadn't found him.
Now, as soon as the kids are in bed, I put a lock and chain on the front door, and at least it doubles up to keep us all safe!
