NASCAR BUMPS AGAINST TRADITION IN ADDRESSING CHEATING
Stock car racing was built by those trying to beat the system.

This is so true. The first NASCAR was built on trying to out run the cops, they were boot leggers. However, we aren't boot legging any more, so if it is to be addressed like a sport, then it must have set rules and regulations. I think they needed to nip this in the bud and not let this type of thing continue. Even further though, I think they addressed it good, but when officials from NASCAR were interviewed, they still didn't act like they cared all that much. They more acted like this was something they had to do, not something they really believed in.
True the whole sport really is driven by who can tweak up the car to get the extra edge. To me that is the whole point of racing. The rules should be strictly enforced in Nascar though as they were put in place for safety.
The cars now can go too fast with out the restrictions they have in place, resulting in fewer crashes with casualties. It is the safety reason and only the safety reason that the rules need to be enforced. Other wise take out all restriction and let them go! After the only point to any race is who can get from a to b the fastest without hurting someone. If this was not the case race cars would not have become the state of the art machines they are.
Rather off topic, but... Having said that rules also help in smaller tracks to allow racing divisions that the person with out big sponsors can afford. |
