PARENTS OF SEXTUPLETS IN B.C. COURT TO FIGHT BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS

The parents of sextuplets born in Vancouver are in B.C. Supreme Court on Monday to challenge a decision by the B.C. government to seize their babies and give them blood transfusions.

Though I don't understand this religious belief, I feel the parents have the right to call the shots on how they want their children treated, medically. Against their will, four of the six children were given blood transfusions. Two died before the children were seized by the government. Three of the children are now healthy, so the transfusions seemed to have worked. Beyond their control, the parents now have healthy children made so by a procedure that is against their religion. Will they sue? Would you?

I will never understand the reasoning behind this religion, not to allow blood transfusions. I think the doctor made the right decision by ordering the blood transfusion inspite of the parents' instructions not to do so. Why? The doctor was simply trying to save the babies' lives. They were premature babies! Doctors are medically trained to determine what is required to save a person's life. Although doctors do make mistakes, we must not forget the fact that, they are human beings too. I think in a case like this, doctors should be given the right to override the decision of a parent, only if they believe that the procedure is necessary, in order to save the person's life.

I am 100 percent sure that the parents will sue for this. But if I have to be honest about this, (that is, if I were the same religion as the parents,) I would try to relax first before making any hasty decisions. I would examine all the facts first and then determine if it would be worthwhile to pursue the matter, by taking legal action. The maternal side of me would be grateful to have my other kids who are healthy and still alive. And based on this, I would not take legal action. Instead, I would grieve first and then focus my attention on my healthy offspring. However, if I am compelled to make a split decision, instinctively, I would go ahead and sue.

Rather off topic, but... If there are any Jehovah Witnesses here in the forum or anyone familiar with this religion, please explain to me why they frown upon blood transfusions?
