A Girl Like Me
Video - Some young African American girls talk about how it feels to be Black in the USA. Thoughts?
Wow, I did not know some African Americans feel this way, it was a very interesting video specially the part when the kids have to choose between a white doll and a black doll.
Here in Trinidad, I think they go through something similar by some people identifying themselves as any other race but African. Also in a lot of families, parents treat their kids differently based on skin color and some cruel ones even make fun of them. Then you know why since such a young age they feel somehow that being "white" is a synonym of beauty or good.
It is terribly sad that the majority of the black children in the video chose the white doll as the "good" or "desirable" doll. Such beautiful children, yet their sense of self-worth is very lacking. I can't help but think that the parents had a great deal to do with this, who else? It's also very ironic that black people wish to be lighter, while whites wish to be darker. Many whites tan themselves to look as dark as possible. It's crazy and hard to understand. All of us, not just the parents, are responsible to help children of every race understand their own beauty and goodness!
