Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday morning after complications from breaking a leg at the Preakness in May.

This is really unfortunate. The doctors didn't make it sound very promissing from the outset, but said that they were trying their best and using everything available to save this animal. Had this been a regular horse and not a Kentucky Derby winner, the horse would have been put down long ago. Basically, if he recovered, he was worth millions as a stud and the owners were willing to take the risk for the reward as well as their feelings for the horse and that should be commended.
If you have ever been fortunate enough to come close to these animals, they are truly magnificent. I really had hoped he would beat the odds and make it back to good health, but it wasn't possible. Everyone loves a beating all the odds story and it really looked like he was going to do just that a few months ago. Hopefully, the veterinarians got some important learnings from this experience that may help with any other horses that experience a similar problem.
