Targeted Advertising

Anyone who has been active on the Internet for more than a few minutes understands how much of the content on the web is marketing. New trends have been evolving for quite some time; now comes some serious targeted advertising in public places.

From Hemispheres magazine (published by United Airlines):

international QUOTE
Here's how it works: When a commuter like Okawa stops near a sign and pauses for as little as half a second, a digital camera snaps a photo of his or her face; then, using facial recognition technology, the software instantly identifies the buyer's gender and age (within 10 years) and displays an ad custom-tailored to his or her particular buying demographic. Teen boys might see a promotion for the newest Judd Apatow flick, for instance, while their younger sisters see a pitch for Pixar's latest. It's a little like abstract art: Everyone sees what they want to see.

That's actually kind of scary.

Advertising Targeted

That is already well in place through Google which has this technology applied in its Image search. Hence when you put a photo in Facebook with your name Google can then use that to associate other Searches. Be careful where and what you put online.

Rather off topic, but...
Make sure to look at the Secret Board and the Topic on Facebook.
