Trinis See Latinos / Hispanics As White
I've heard that Trinis See Latinos / Hispanics As White - is that true?
I can't speak for every Trini. As a Hispanic in Trinidad and in my experience, people referred to me as both: "Spanish", "White" or even "Whitey" in the street.
Some Trinis seem to be color-struck so if they see someone who is light-skinned and is not an East Indian or an Afro-Trini (reds included) they automatically label the person as "White" (let me emphasized that I observe this with people who are not very educated, sorry if it sounds harsh). I used to correct them but not anymore. People will see you in the way they want to see you no matter what.
Rather off topic, but... I do not have the hair black anymore like in my avatar, otherwise I would definitly pass for an East Indian. But I have light brown hair with blonde highlights now which (in my view) makes me look even more Hispanic. |
