Codeine is very useful for fighting pain and is essentially mild enough to use for everyday use to battle headaches and such. My father was on if for many years. However, codeine is a physically addictive drug that will make you dependent and require larger and larger amounts to effectively fight pain. The biggest draw back to codeine is its escalating usage and its withdrawal. One who suddenly stops taking codeine will suffer the pain to an even greater extent while getting off the drug. But as far as narcotics go, it is rather mild compared to others in its class.

Actually, the largest drawback to codiene is not the narcotic itself, but the packaging that comes with it. Tylenol is a liver killer. If one remains on the drug for too long, it WILL inevitably destroy your liver.
