I think we're making a mountain out of a mole hill. |

Why can't the wife go with the husband and help him out? |
JB, the ejaculation into a cup seems to be the most popular method but there are other methods available where I can see an LDS guy be able to fit and be part of it perfectly without putting his standards in jeopardy:

Condom collection: During this process, semen is collected during intercourse using a special condom provided by a physician. Split ejaculate: This method uses a two-part container to collect sperm. The initial spurt should be collected in one part of the container, and the rest is collected in the second part. Urine collection: During this process, semen is collected from urine in a laboratory. This is an option for men who have retrograde ejaculation, a condition that causes semen to be released backward into the bladder at male climax. |
Okay, I like to think I am a typical LDS man. I am not an LDS man that has never experienced masterbation, but hopefully I am passed that point in my life, but I digress.
Not long ago after coming to the decision with my wife that we were through having more children we decided that I would have a vasectomy. After the procedure you are instructed to come back and give a sample to make sure the operation was successful. They offered me a room to collect the sample in and I said I would be more comfortable getting it at home and bringing it in. I was told that the sample had to be back in a half an hour. My wife assisted me in getting it and I was back in a half and hour.
There is nothing that I know of that says you can't have your wife assist you. Masterbation is something that I think we should stay away from at all costs. I would definitely fear for a man who had the restraint to never have experienced it before and was faced with this situation. It is a slippery slope that is hard to get away from once you have started.
Going home is a good idea, however some people do not live so close, plus I believe in certain circumstances there can be no external involvement. In this case it was just to check to see what is functioning I guess, in the other the actual sample needs to be collected and used right away?
I think it's important to consider the purpose of the act. In this context, it's not immoral at all. It's merely a physical act necessary to allow for the medical diagnosis to be complete and effective.
It's like suggesting that inserting a hand into a woman's vagina is immoral during birth. Sure, it's immoral to let a man insert his hand into you in MOST cases, but not for birth (or examinations).
It's not just about the act - it's about the whys behind the act.
I look at the bigger picture... If we're not able to have children and this is the way to get it happening then it needs to be done.
