CHEYENNE, Wyoming - About 14 percent of Wyoming's population, or about 71,000 people, are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That statistic is just one of many factors behind the creation of the Mormon Studies Initiative, a committee formed out of the Religion Department at the University of Wyoming.

Studies Mormon

I grew up in Wyoming and am surprized by the total percentage of mormons within the state. It didn't seem to be as high when I was there. In my small town of about 1500, there were about 40 of us. Perhaps the percentage has gone up over the last 30 years.

I see the Mormon Studies class as a positive step toward understanding and tolerance between religions. The article states that the purpose is not only to build tolerance for Mormons, but tolerance by Mormons. Ms. Stephenson suggests that Mormons are intolerant of other religions because of their proselyting efforts.

There's been a lot of unhappiness in world history that someone was so convinced they were right that they had to make everyone else convinced of it too.

This seems a little harsh, do we force people to convert? No. Ah well, perhaps the studies class will help to clear up some of these misconceptions.
