Usually what I do after making a call is check to see how much it costs. I do not know for other countries, but the service locally allows me to check balances, call costs, etc.

I have generally not faced such a problem as I generally stick to prepaid cards. I have many friends (on postpaid plans) who have received astronomical bills when they have rarely used their phone!

So, to be on the safe side, I try to stick with the prepaid plans where I pay in advance and my balance keeps getting deducted as I use the minutes. And when it finishes, I just have to go and recharge it from any of the hundreds of outlets present.
