Roman Catholic Church in America

Pressure is on to change the Roman Catholic Church in America, but it's not coming from the usual liberal suspects. A new breed of theological conservatives has taken to blogs and YouTube to say the church isn't Catholic enough. Enraged by dissent that they believe has gone unchecked for decades, and unafraid to say so in the starkest language, these activists are naming names and unsettling the church. Ref. Source 1

Bishops Prepare for Largest Civil Disobedience Since the 60s

The United States Catholic bishops are readying American Catholics for what may be the largest campaign of civil disobedience since the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's.

In addition to 12 lawsuits against the Obama Administration including 46 plaintiffs from dioceses, hospitals and universities, the US Catholic bishops will urge Catholics to openly defy the Obama HHS Mandate. In June, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will distribute bulletin inserts nationwide, which reference Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And his call for civil disobedience in response to unjust laws. As Pope Francis prepares to celebrate his first Christmas Mass at the Vatican, a new poll indicates the unconventional and popular pontiff is winning high marks from American Catholics.

A CNN/ORC International poll released today found that 88% of American Catholics approve of how Francis is handling his role as head of the 1.2 billion-member church. By comparison, three-quarters of American Catholics approved of how Pope John Paul II was leading the church in 1994; that number rose to 84% in 1999 and dipped to 64% in 2003, at the height of the church's sexual abuse crisis.

American Catholics seem to like Francis' new direction. Nearly two-thirds agree with him about the amount of attention that should be paid to moral issues, according to the CNN/ORC poll. On other key issues for Catholics - the role of women in the church and the sexual abuse crises - Francis gets similarly high ratings among his American flock.

Among Americans in general, nearly three in four view Francis favorably.

The poll was conducted for CNN by ORC International on December 16 through 19, and included interviews with 1,035 adults nationwide, including 191 Catholics, who were questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points and the sampling error for Catholic respondents is plus or minus seven percentage points. Ref. CNN
