Finnish centralised pay deal confirmed
Finland News

All three Finnish union federations approved a draft centralised pay deal in board meetings on Thursday, paving the way for tax carrots. The federations ? SAK, STTK and Akava, accepted two rises totalling 4.3 per cent over two years garnished with an additional 150-euro rise that will come into effect in January. Last week, the unions rejected a 4.3-per cent offer that lacked the supplementary lump sum rise.

It takes all types
Finland News

The Enneagram of Personality seeks to create better understanding of both the individual and the surrounding group. OVER the years, have I been romantic and imaginative, or pragmatic and down to earth? Hmm, good question. I stop to think for a moment, and finally settle on the answer that my instinct had immediately selected: romantic and imaginative. Actually, maybe I should check with my wife and see exactly just how she feels I fare in the romance department. I make a note to purchase some flowers and continue reading.

Part-time employment increases dropout risk for tertiary-level students
Finland News

A doctoral thesis in education warns of the harmful effects of tertiary-level students being forced to balance work and study. FINDING a balance between paid employment and study is often difficult for tertiary-level students. The more studies become prolonged through work commitments, the greater the risk of dropping out, claims recently-graduated Doctor of Philosophy (Education) Riitta Kalima. Kalima teaches at the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.

Shock Greek developments threaten bailout
Finland News

JUST a week after the terms to stabilise the European sovereign debt crisis were agreed, political developments in Greece have imperilled the entire process. Markets were spooked, with equities and troubled bonds falling drastically worldwide. After the initial optimism of last week?s deal and the possibility that China would loan Europe money, investors began to have second thoughts. It emerged that the 50 per cent haircut for Greek bonds would only apply to private investors, and the level of debt owed to the European Central Bank and donor countries would not change. As this would still leave Greece with unsustainable levels of debt, investors lost faith in the deal and stock markets fell.

Take a pill, won?t you?
Finland News

As a professed multivitamin-pill user I was shocked by the new studies about nutrition supplements. I am not alone. About a third of the adult population in welfare states take vitamin supplements on a regular base. The pills? overnight Kafkaesque metamorphosis from valuable to harmful is not easy to cope with. Not only are most of the supplements virtually superfluous. They also may be a serious health risk.

Learning Finnish kuin täi tervassa
Finland News

I have become something of an expert in Finnish classes. Not by choice but because I have learnt Finnish so slowly that I have taken most courses on offer ? twice. From the Open University to the University of Helsinki and Aikuisopisto ? I?ve tried them all. What has come to interest me over the years are the criticisms levelled at those courses by many students. Perhaps the most common criticism is that the course was all grammar and no conversation. Two years into my studies I knew all about the essiivi case but could barely order a coffee. I felt that what we really needed was discussion, and yet every week what we actually did was grammar.

Katainen joins the municipal reform battle
Finland News

MOUNTING OPPOSITION to the government?s programme of municipal reforms finally put Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen (NCP) on the counter-offensive last weekend. In his presentation, which was billed as a political overview, he discussed practically no other topics. Recently, there has been a joining of forces among the various opponents to the amalgamation of municipalities, many of which come from within the NCP?s own ranks.

Why preside?
Finland News

A country that is in danger of losing sight of its core values and of losing hope in the future needs a head of State who can reunite and reinvigorate the country, says presidential candidate Paavo Lipponen. IT?S A QUESTION I have been frequently asked on the campaign trail in recent weeks: Why do I want to be President? The inquirers usually soften the question, along the following lines: Why, now that constitutional amendments have left the President with precious little power?
