Jyrki Katainen (NCP), the Finnish prime minister, told the Finnish News Agency (STT) that the government would have to take "unpalatable" fiscal policy decisions next year.
"It is appropriate to promise that we will spare no effort to take decisions that are essential in order to defend Finnish welfare society," Katainen said.
Katainen's government aims to cut spending and raise taxes in order to reduce borrowing.

The third unit of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant may become the most expensive building in the world upon completion, Aamulehti reports, revealing that the cost estimate has jumped from the initial 3 billion to 8?8.5 billion euro. The new estimate is based on information provided by Nucleonics Week, a journal on nuclear energy. Teollisuuden Voima (TVO), the operator of the power plant, has declined to comment on the estimate while work on the site continues.

Asphalt Cartel Hit With 37M Penalty

The District Court of Helsinki has imposed a penalty payment of over 37 million euro on the eight road-paving companies that participated in a nationwide asphalt cartel, which overcharged municipalities by 15?20 per cent for road construction projects between 1994 and 2002. With penalty and other interests, the fine may yet double, a law firm representing the City of Espoo estimated after the ruling.

The dissenting judge argued that although evidence corroborating the murder charge was presented, reasonable doubt about the presence of a third party remains.

THE WORKING conditions of employees of small businesses are better in comparison to employees in larger workplaces, a recent survey finds. According to the survey, employees in workplaces with fewer than ten staff members are more satisfied with their wages and working times, and are able to influence their work pace more than people part of a larger work community. In addition, the relationship between the management and the employees is better in small businesses.
