Side Effects Of Stopping Concerta

Once again we are thinking about stopping Concerta 36mg to Felipe after one of Felipe's doctors told us they want to lower the dosage to 18mg because 36 is a bit too high for his age, nevertheless we know how he is with 18mg alone: no difference so we decided to make a total change in activities, etc. So I am hoping to get some information about side effects of the drug when you stop it.

So far, I found out that it is not joke. Once you stop is like you stop giving cocaine to a drug addict since methylphenidate is an stimulant and can cause addiction to the drug if you try to remove it quickly, that's why you need to stop it gradually. It can also cause withdrawals symptoms and the following:

international QUOTE
*  Extreme fatigue (tiredness)
* Depression
* Unusual behavior.

Although Concerta withdrawal is generally not life-threatening, it can be very uncomfortable. It can be so uncomfortable that people will start taking Concerta again in order to relieve the Concerta withdrawal symptoms.

international QUOTE
When stopping extended, regular treatment with this drug, gradually reducing the dosage as directed will help prevent withdrawal reactions. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Though it is very unlikely to occur, this medication can also result in abnormal drug-seeking behavior (addiction/habit-forming). Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed. Properly stop the medication when so directed. This will lessen the chances of becoming addicted.

international QUOTE
This medicine must not be stopped suddenly without your doctor's advice, as this could unmask symptoms such as depression and overactivity in the child. When stopping treatment, the medicine should be withdrawn gradually, following the instructions given by your doctor.

Concerta Stopping Effects Side

So the main problem seems to be addiction with a secondary problem of depression and unusual behavior.

Well, the addiction is not an issue since we are not dealing with a teen or adult in our case. The unusual behavior will be 'normal' since with Felipe most of his movements seems to be involuntary. As far as depression, I have only see this when he is medicated as opposed to being off the meds. I think the key will be lots of activities.

Does not matter his age. He may not be able to say he "needs" the drug but through an abnormal hyperactivity we will see it. It always happens.
My main concern is how do you go about gradually decreasing the dose to stop for good when you cannot cut the pill?

Concerta Stopping Effects Side

There are different doses for concerta, but they are not always readily available. Right now he is prescribed 36mg, so if you go to 18mg that is a significant decrease. The question I have is how long should he be at that dosage before we do not give him anymore? After taking 18mg for 'x' days we should then stop - what is 'x'?

That's what the doctor have to tell us. You need to call him and explain, he is the one who is supposed to answer you how to go about stopping it.

Actually despite the warnings I read that Concerta is one of the easiest drugs to stop, nevertheless I believe it should be done gradually, I suppose the doctor can tell us more about this tomorrow when you talk with him.

I read that those parents that stopped Concerta, some of the kids suffered headaches and over hyperactivity (withdrawal), after that the child just behaved the same way before it was put into Concerta. (ADHD symptoms)

How long does the withdrawal effects stay? A few days or weeks? Is it possible to totally cleanse the body from methylphenidate, the main ingredient of concerta?
