I encourage you to read about circumcision thoroughly before really making a decision about it for your child.

Personally, I was circumcised and both of my sons were as well. The claim that males that are circumcised remember it and it shows in their pain response during shots time is not proven with all children. Both of my boys took shots very well and had little crying involved. Oddly enough, its my little girl that has the biggest problem and she was obviously not circumcised. We chose to have them circumcised due to benefits fighting bacteria and infection as they get older down their and because of sensitivity benefits when older as well. It was not much of a decision, in fact, we spent only a few minutes researching it.
My son was circumcised also and I think is a good method to keep good health and cleaning habits. Since my son was born in the US, they asked us if we wanted to do it and we said yes but since we are now in Trinidad and we plan to have more children, I want to find out how this procedure is done in this country, but I will definetly do it again if I have more boys.
LDS_forever, have you looked into circumcision practises in Trinidad, seeing that you are now having another boy? As for myself and my son, we are both circumcised, and really, it was a no brainer for us. Our belief is that circumcision is a healthier choice in the long run, and the doctors in the US also recommended it to us for the same reasons. I don't know how many problems today with adult males are attributed to non-circumcision, so mandating it may not be the way to go. I would say keep it as a highly recommended procedure, unless there is a sound medical reason that it be required.

Yes, I had not realized that the US circumcision rate is the highest in the world; over 60%. I always assumed that circumcision was a normal practice in most countries. I understand your reservations about having the procedure done in Trinidad, especially if it is not common. Would it be possible to find a private doctor maybe, one that specializes in the procedure, that could perform it after you and the baby had been released from the hospital?

Is there a reason you want it done the day he is born? Our son didn't have his done until 2 days later. So long as he is monitored for a day or so after the procedure, he should be fine. We basically just had to put vaseline around the area for a couple of days while it healed, but he was back to normal in less than a week.
