Best Fantasy Books

I'm an avid fantasy reader and I'm looking for some new ones to read. I thought what better place to ask for help than here. So, if you have any suggestions about any fantasy book that you have read then go ahead an reply. Thanks!

You may get a taste of this in another thread called "What books are you reading?" - there are many answers there, and lots of sci-fi/fantasy titles.

My fave author recently is Robin Hobb. Her newest is the Soldier Son Trilogy, which, if you've read anything she writes, is in the same league as previous trilogies. But be prepared to be deeply moved - she doesn't pull any punches, and most of the time there isn't any kind of a blue sky happy ending. She's very real with her characters.

One of the best lesser known authors that I've read os David Duncan's "Man of his Word" series and its sequel series "A Handful of Men" Each is four books long and in my estimation are some of the best fantasy ever written. I put them up with the Edding's "Belgariad" series and its sequel, et all.

Another Trilogy is "The Riddle Master of Hed" Trilogy by Patricia McKillip. Think of someone worthy of Ursula LeGuin.

For Science Fiction, David Brin's Uplift group of books blow me away. The Premise is brilliant.

Mercedes Lackey's Obsidian Trilogy is one of my favorites as well.

Also, Dave Flint's 1632 series, including the collections in between the main books have me drooling like a Pavlovian Dog, laugh.gif

I hope this list has some that you haven't seen. I may post it in the books list as well.

Have you ever read the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman? The three books are separately called Norther Lights/The Golden Compass (I think the latter is the American name), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. They're some of my favourite books, so incredibly compelling and with such great characters, and an amazing, original storyline.

However, I should warn you that, if you're particularly religious, you might find them offensive - although having said that, two of my friends who are devoted Christians absolutely loved them as well. Actually, one of them encouraged me to read them smile.gif

I have read the Phillip Pullman trilogy that you were speaking of and I really enjoyed them too! I was absolutely thrilled to hear that the first book had been made into a blockbuster and can't wait to watch it. It only comes out on Boxing Day in New Zealand.

I can recommend the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant written by Stephen Donaldson. There are nine books in total and I have read seven of them. I am searching for the second book in the Last Chronicles but it is proving difficult to locate! I will probably have to order it online as most bookstores don't seem to stock more than one book in the series, which is most disappointing. But I suppose that considering the volume of literature available and the constant stream of new releases it would be unrealistic to expect that books which are not considered mainstream be in stock.

I cannot recommend enough the Stone Dance of The Chameleon trilogy by a Scottish based author called Ricardo Pinto. The first two books are The Chosen and The Standing Dead and they are two of the best books I have ever read. Apparently, the third and final book is in the final stages of being put together and should be out next year so I can't wait.

Pinto's world is so detailed and the characters so well drawn that I actually missed them after I finished the books!

Another very very funny fantasy book is called Life on Urth which is set in a parallel Earth. I had forgotten the name of the author so I googled the book title and got John Kirkbride as the author. I can't be certain its him but I'm pretty sure. If you ever read the book and hear the serpent from the Garden of Eden say he only wanted to give Eve the apple because the poor girl was "positively anorexic" then you're on to a winner. I remember taking the book out of the library, starting it in the afternoon and staying up till the next morning to finish it. It was top class.

I read lots of fantasy books but I couldn't come up with better name than The Lord Of The Rings. I think LOTR trilogy are the best fantasy books I have ever read. I always love the books, read them over every year and even I have watched the movie I always feel that the book is so much better, so much more challenging
