Do crystal balls and similar objects really have some kind of power? Throughout time man has always depicted the ability to see into someone's future or past through the use of an object (pool of water, silver platter, ball, etc.) with the most common of these being the crystal ball. What is your view?
There is no way that a crystal ball can predict the future. Just like a deck of cards is unable to do so. I believe most of the predictions are made in such a general manner that it makes little difference what happens in the future, you could say it was accurately predicted. I also believe a lot of what is foretold is based upon what they infer from conversations with the person receiving the reading.
The reason the gypsies came up with the crystal ball idea is to get you focused on something other than them. "Look into the ball and you will see the future". Because you are now focused on the ball you are not aware that they closely watch you're facial expressions in response to the "feeders" that they throw at you. It's very similar to how magicians do there tricks.
DV, your explanation makes a lot of sense. Although I have never heard it before, it definately sounds like it is feasible. This can be true of staring at tea leaves as well. It doesn't matter whether it is a crystal ball or something else, most of these people, in my opinion, don't have any special powers. I same most because I am not sure if some people doing this could be getting there information from an evil spirit, if you believe in such things and then have evil motives. However, I believe that certainly the vast majority of people do this for money and most who get the readings view it as entertainment.

I don't think that magic is anything supernatural, but more illusion than anything else. From certain things I've read, people state that it's more about being able to control your mind, will, emotions, etc. I'm not sure what to think about the crystal ball though, in a way it does seem like a distractor so the other person can read their facial expressions while they talk about certain things. Sometimes, though it could be for the reader to concentrate on other things. Like said, if you believe in something enough, you'll make it come true one way or another.
