Don Imus - Page 4

He is absolutely right! He *did* acknowledge that what he said was stupid and hurt people, but what about the others? Who (some) also work for CBS! It's double standards for sure and shows the hypocrisy of these big chains like CBS who never really cared about what Imus was saying on the air but decided to pull him off after the sponsors started leaving and the pressure was being build up.

I liked this line of the article, very true:

QUOTE
CBS paid him $10 million a year to be outrageous, offensive and irreverent. You could not pull up a tape of an Imus in the Morning show without finding him insulting someone and saying something inappropriate.
Now he's been fired for the same reason he was hired.

I guess I wouldn't say that at all. He can truly be sorry for what he said, but realize the hypocricy of the entire situation. I certainly see it.

I was the one that brought up the names of Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock. There are several parts to their show that I cannot bring to these pages that are certainly not from the history, but are from their fertile minds. Additionally, they also make fun of fat people, white people and you basically name it. They cannot be making referrence to their white or fat past because they were never either. The Wayan brothers actually made fun of handicapped people, yet they weren't handicapped. All they heard was laughter. Several rap artist that have been popular have never even seen the bad side of LA let alone any ghetto, but can sure talk like it. Fortunately or unfortunately, for Imus, his ill-timed and poorly choosen joke fell flat.

If we look at this as a mandate to clean up the airwaves from offensive comments to any group, there is going to be a lot less TV, Radio and Movies for a while. Imus is gone and probably will resurface on satellite radio or maybe he will just retire and the world will be rid of him. But what does it get us? So we have learned you can't say "Nappy Headed Ho" as a white man on the radio, if your demographic or geological location prohibit it. Some victory...

If you don't like shock jocks or certain performers, don't buy the products that the sponsors pitch or the CD's. The one thing that we should take away from this is that their is a system in place where you can affect the things broadcast without using the FCC for things that they were never designed or intended to do. However, I have no doubt that this will have fallen on deaf ears. In that case, Imus saying that this is all hypocritical is spot on.

When the heck did he get back on radio? That certainly was done quietly. Is he still hitting everyone the same or has he changed his tone?

It really hasn't been quiet. He has been on for about a week now and I would say that he hasn't changed much...other than he wont be saying "nappy-headed hos" nearly as much anymore. He is still the same cantankerous old man he was before he left from what I have read. The only question that many are wondering is if the stars will still come to join him on his show or is he off limits.

Rather off topic, but...
I wanted to put a update on this for a while, but no double posting. I figured your news scavenger would eventually pick it up.

The one key thing is that he was without a doubt wrongly terminated by his former company and got paid a undisclosed (millions) amount of money to let it go. AND HE DID GET PAID WELL!

I hope Don has not now set a precedent of 'say what you want and get paid for it to'. Actually, lawyers will probably look at this case and ensure they add some 'extra' items to any new contracts.

As it came out (and I cannot find the links any longer), his contract was really detailed towards a situation where he said something and a knee-jerk reaction of firing him would be covered. He has been down this road I think a few times and his lawyers were keen to it as well. Basically, the network had to give him a warning of anything said that could result in his firing. The network had not given him a warning before and his "nappy-headed" comment should have been the first, but they just went ahead and fired him, thus breaking the contract that they agreed to... End result, Imus got paid a good share of his remaining salary on the contract (I think it was like 30 million left on the contract) to leave the network.

This guy is always about one syllable away from saying something too offensive and the boundaries of offensiveness change from time to time, so this was his barometer of sorts. Pretty clever if you are in the shock jock business, if you ask me.

Well keep in mind the company reacted the way they did because a lot of sponsors started to immediately pull out. That would make any board of directors react hastily.

That is definitely true...the did make a economic decision. However, they tried to escape their obligation to the contract they signed. That was the whole thing that got me...they KNOW he does and says offensive things. They know it. There were no secrets being kept about that...he has decades of evidence to prove it, but they liked the money he could bring in through the sponsors, so they signed him. He wanted the clause on the warning and they agreed, because...as we just stated...they KNOW he is going to offend someone and they want an out too. I look at them as hypocrites and I am happy they had to pay for this...as they never complained one day when he was bringing in all the cash offending group after group.

If you hire a shock jock, don't pretend to be surprised that they might one day actually shock you.
