A Virginia Tech student goes into an anger rampage and murders 31 people and them commits suicide. Could more have been done? Is Virginia Tech really a safe place to study? What is your view?

You know it kind of makes me sad that those students didn't remember the 9 11 day and the airplane where all the passengers knew they were going to be killed, and what they did was since they knew that then they got together and attacked the killers. Why couldn't the students remember that and go after the killer instead of just laying there waiting to be killed?

It seems that they just wanted everybody else to be the hero. The only one was the teacher who gave up his life in protecting his students as best as he could. at least he remembered.

Wayned, many of then DID jump through windows in order to escape, others could not jump fast enough and some played dead. A lot of these students were about to graduate or in the process of doing and a lot of them would have possibly had enough sense to act appropriately despite the stress of it all.

The total dead from the Hall was right at 30. This is basically the size of 1-2 classes. Now I am not certain as they haven't given us all the sorted detail on his every step, but it seems logical that majority of his killing was confined to 1-2 rooms. These people simply did not have enough time or warning to do anything other than to play dead or jump out a window if it was close. The people from 911 had plenty of time and cellphone calls to tell them that they were going to die...the choice is easier to make at that point (non the less heroic, but easier). The other rooms did respond. A couple of students used a table to block the door to keep the killer out. The teacher used his body to block another door while the students escaped. Another room took control of the door once he left. They did what they could once they realized the situation.

The key for me is the accounts that most that survived initially thought it was construction. This is because that sort of sound was pretty normal there and while annoyed the continued on with their test. Cho's choice of weapons were a 9mm and a .22 hand gun. The .22 basically makes very little noise and if shot many would not even know it was a gun as a nail gun is louder. The 9mm doesn't make a huge blast and could easily be mistaken for construction chatter. The choice of these 2 weapons makes me think that he really knew what he was doing and it was not a insane spur of the moment thing. This is not to say he wasn't disturbed in life, but that this act was planned thoroughly.

9mm hand guns have a problem and it is why the military stopped issuing them and many police refuse to use them. They are ineffective at delivering deadly force with a single shot. There are stories after stories of police/military shooting someone with 2, 3 and 4 bullets from a 9mm only to have them continue to charge. That is why they use a 45 or a 357. However, Cho was using hollowed points on his weapons. This is why the number of dead was so high with a 9mm.

If he comes running through with a automatic weapon or a heavier handgun, there is no mistaking the sound and the element of surprise is gone with the first couple of shots.

As you said Vicenzo, Cho really appears to have thought this through. Especially in view of the fact of the video that he sent to the media. Like Farseer, I'm irritated by the blame that is being placed first here, then there. I feel this is mostly the media's fault, stirring up controversy because it's newsworthy. I'm sure there were many hero's. Some have already been discovered, like the teacher who used his body to block the door while instructing his students to jump out the window. Many others will most likely come to light in the coming days.

It appears that mass shootings are more common since 1960's. I wonder if televison's broadcasting of violent acts has dulled the senses?

Vicenzo, that is a very good article from the NY Times for those wanting the nitty gritty details of what happened in Norris Hall. Cho would enter a class and shoot everyone in sight, then move on to another room. What is horrifying is that he would come back a second time just to make sure there wasn't anyone he missed or to shoot more bullets into those already shot. I heard that all thos who were injured each had three bullet holes. He was calculating and deliberate. What a horrible experience for those students and teachers.

In his video he talks about showing this as an example for those that are weak or I guess similar to him - he shows that if you want to mass murder people in a university or any public institution then you can do it. This was almost done as though he had jihad training.

Like September 11th, we must now consider... will this now awaken every psycho, every loony, every loner to now go out, buy a weapon and attempt to blow up their classmates?

This also makes you wonder how people will treat others who may be naturally shy, standoffish or just communicate with difficulty. Will there be regular screening of students? So many questions.
