VS Naipaul - Page 3

QUOTE (yeniseri @ 19-Jul 07, 3:57 PM)
I believes he truly loves T&T and his works are an indirect message for us top get our act together.

How do you reach such conclusion? His behavior and works do not show any "love" for the country (not that I think he should love Trinidad) BUT you are making a bold statement in saying he loves Trinidad. I would be interested if you could expand on this. Thanks.

but since I start from myself, I am a T&T critic but I still love T&T like my mother because it made me what I am today. I only realized how ignorant some Trinis were when I came to the US, where I was exposed to a higher level order (relative, of course) of efficiency, progress, and planning, where Trinis have more tools in place than most islands but we are not putting it to the best use.

I have read most of Naipaul books and his most famous term 'mimic men' best describes Trinis to a T (for Trini-of course) We are always looking to copy and not innovate, we want things for nothing, we always want to lime (hang out by the corner) and have no plans for the future. I like to do all of those things but there is no progress in being static. Like my parents would say, if you do not want people making style on you, get up and get for yourself. Like VS, I too feel disgusted by many Trinis but that does not make me love Trinidad any less so I distinguish between the sweetness of T&T and the attitude of some of the citizens in leadership positions.

QUOTE
Trinis tend to be small minded so Naipaul should not have been surprised by the questions.

"Small minded?" These questions came from school children who were eager to learn more from someone they admire and respect. I think the way Sir VS Naipaul behaved during his visit at the Lakshmi Girls school was unforgivable.

I disagree. After Sir VS Naipaul won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2001, I remember the Time Magazine interviewing him shortly afterwards. There is one question that the Time Magazine reporter asked and I have to admit, I was not the least bit surprised by the Sir VS Naipaul's answer. It was a very simple question. The reporter asked if Sir VS Naipaul considered himself a West Indian or an Englishman. Do you know what his response was? "An Englishman!" The mere fact that he chose to refer to himself as an Englishman, rather than a West Indian, speaks volumes about his patriotism.

The man is a racist period. Our people are so stupid for praising a guy who has nothing but contempt for Trinidad and Tobago.

There are so many unrecognized people within our ranks who could be praised for their patriotism or community works, but maybe it is better that you use prose to insult the country if you want to be acknowledged.

VS Naipaul

Well, more hidden secrets in the life of this controversial author. He stated that the cruelty he put through to his first wife may have been the cause of her death. Please read article below:

QUOTE
LONDON: Nobel laureate Sir VS Naipaul tormented his first wife for nearly four decades, regularly visited brothels in London and kept a mistress for almost 24 years before suddenly leaving her to marry a Pakistani scribe, according to his biography.

Watch: "I could have killed my first wife"

The 75-year-old novelist, born to Indian parents in Trinidad and living in Britain since winning a place in Oxford, has admitted in his biography that he frequently humiliated his first wife (Patricia) and even refused to gift her a wedding ring.

Naipaul often abandoned her to go travelling with Mrs Gooding, the married Anglo-Argentine with whom he fell in love in 1972, and would often tell his wife how he was missing his mistress but then say that he needed Lady Patricia to help him with his books,
reveals the biography.

"I was liberated. She (Patricia) was destroyed. It was inevitable," the Nobel laureate said.

The book, penned by Patrick French who was given free access to all of Naipaul's papers, claims that the novelist started visiting prostitutes when the couple were living in London three years after they married.

"In the summer of 1958, turning imagination into reality, he (Naipaul) started to have sex with prostitutes. He would find their telephone numbers in local newspapers and visit them in the afternoon in secret while Pat was at work as a school teacher,"
The Daily Telegraph reported on Friday, quoting the biography.

Naipaul, according to the book, has admitted that his mental cruelty towards his wife, who was suffering from cancer, may have killed her. "She suffered. It could be said that I killed her. It could be said. I feel a little bit that way," he said.

Naipaul also recollected his visit to a hospital to see Patricia on deathbed where he showed "little compassion" towards her.

The biographer has substantiated Naipaul's admission by quoting Patricia's entries in her diary. In one entry she said: "Vidia told me he had not enjoyed making love to me since 1967. You don't behave like a writer's wife. You behave like the wife of a clerk who has risen above her station....

Now we know why the old man is a hater. He don't like West Indians so he beats up on his wife. I'm amazed he actually has the guts to allow someone to write a book about it, what nerve!

You all see now! Naipaul is Trini to the BONE! Get it!
That is a Trini Naipaul self so why are we surprised?

The same habits he is doing privately, is the same habits he is publicly trouncing.
As I said, Naipaul is /has been wiritng about truth so I cannot fault any man that, if he says a "lie' about me, only the reality is saviour! Am I as he said I am , or if it is not then the writer/onlooker comes up looking like the donkey! Can I say arse!
This PC attitude is a come mierda (I.e. crap) so not mincing words allows people to see and taste the truth. In this case, the truth is so bitter, it is sweet!

Another excellenet Trini writer/author/lecturer is Arnold Rampersad! A more dignified and erudite individual who has done an excellent analysis on Langston Hughes (my mind is fading here!). Will check back.
