Horse Meat Deli

Argentina has a very strong Italian heritage and we eat most of the foods they eat there, cold meats or "deli" are very popular and one of them called mortadella is in fact made of horse meat. Of course nowdays is made of a whole bunch of meats but believe me, the taste of mortadella is very different from any other deli I have ever tasted. Yes, it is a very common deli just like bologna, of course I doubt most Argentinian know what mortadella really is, and for those who may wonder...it taste nice although I always rather salami or other deli than mortadella (who knows...I became psychologically affected after finding out that what I ate almost all my life was horse meat) undecided.gif

I am reasonably sure I have eaten mortadella myself. My brother-in-law is of italian descent. His father grew up in Italy, his mother is first generation in the US. Her parents grew up in Italy. They eat lots of different Italian foods. Mortadella sounds very familiar to me. I certainly had no idea it was horse meat though! That has me wondering if I will be brave enough to eat it next time it is offered. undecided.gif

It is a favorite cuisine in France too, I haven't personally eaten it, and don't think that I could bring myself to do so. My husband however, has. We went on holiday to France a few years ago, and my husband ended up in hospital.
Whilst he was in the hospital, he was served up horse meat a few times, and it was a case of eat it or do without, so he ate it.
He has said that he found it surprisingly tasty, and if I can ever convince him to go back to France again (which I doubt) then he will probably quite willingly eat it again!
As for me, it's still a definite no no!

This is a funny thread! The idea of being mentally affected by eating horse meat, or refusing to eat it because its horse meat is a text book example of social tendencies imposed on society in general. Really, what is so different about eating a cow, horse, deer, dog, cat, or any other animal? Its simply your stigma against eating an animal "made for riding" or any other "pretty" animal. Its the same stigma that makes people protest killing of seals but not fish. I would have no problem eating horse meat, or any other animal. Animals are all prey to humans, so they are all fair game for food as far as I'm concerned.

Here here konquererz! We are at the top of the food chain so why not enjoy it?

I have ate it before as mortadella and navel beef/ salt meat. Salt beef was more expensive so many bought the horse instead. I do not prefer mortadella nor am I crazy about boloney, I prefer a smoked meat that is less processed is the reason.

As long as it is clean and the animal is healthy I see no issue other than social stigmatisms.

In asia, some countries actually cook horse meat up kind of like a steak. It doesn't taste bad, especially if you do not know it is horse meat. So yes, I have eaten it. Was it so delicious that I just have to have more horse meat and will go out of my way to get it? No, but I rank it up there with the Kangaroo meat that I had too try in Australia. I would eat it again if it looked like it would be a good dish.

Being in asia, you definitely have to free your mind on eating or you will miss out on a lot. Of course, there are things that I definitely have been willing to miss out on!

I for one would not mind eating horse meat. I am one who has eaten a lot of different foods especially while in the orient. I would try anything once and if I liked it again. Let it be said that if it walked on four feet and had fur I probably have eaten it. If it has two legs and feathers I would eat or have eaten it. I am a member of PETA (People for the Eating of Tasty Animals) biggrin.gif IF they were not meant to be eaten then why do they taste so good?

Unless I was starving I think I would pass on horse meat and dog. I have been around horses all my life and they are such beautiful animals I just can't see eating them. I know it is just a socialized thing. I could eat other so-called exotic meats. Regardless of what kind of animal we eat, I do believe it needs to be done with respect for the animal and without waste or excess.
