Had you considered that if a telepath were powerful enough to read any mind he or she chose that the same individual would have little control over NOT hearing the thoughts of others? Someone who has every thought for a two mile radius floating through their own mind would be classified as schizophrenic in American society and would have to be in a rubber room. Actually they would have to live in a "fright dome" which is a term for a room where the electromagnetic output is so high it may engender a sense of foreboding in a person trapped inside. For a telepath, it would drown out the voices with white noise.

There are not a lot of verified cases of telepathy in the annals of paranormal research but virtually all of them are very peculiar people. They can not be touched, they choose to live in isolation from humanity, they are antisocial or sociopaths. Why? The ability to read other people's minds usually comes with the IN-ability to shut it out as well, until the person can be trained to a deep meditative level. It's like having a tv set where the channels change constantly and you can not control the volume. Also research has shown that most people who claim to some ability to know the thoughts of others usually know the emotions and sometimes physical condition of others and they can't shut this out either without extensive training. Empathy is good if it is small and controlled, total empathy can kill an individual. An example from fiction ... Stephen King's "The Green Mile". John Coffe had total empathy and some ability to heal by taking what was wrong into himself leaving only health behind. Personalities like the one guard or the man who actually killed the girls put him in physical pain by the force of their negative energy and convoluted thinking. He chose death over continuing to live with the condition because it is a burden on the soul.

Telepathy IS possible to a greater or lesser extent. Telepaths would not take over the world, they'd know there was no point in trying. No one would listen to them anyway.
