Adulthood And Maturing

Do you agree with the following statement?

Real adulthood is the result of two qualities: self-discipline and self-reliance. The process of developing them together in balance is called maturing.

There is no difference, although if you truly believe this you are then forced to think how is it possible to say that someone young is not an adult, if they are equally mature as an adult expectation. Also following in conclusion there is for sure immature adults there fore you can not really say they are adults.

I think that it's limiting to conclude that there are only two qualities which determine adulthood. I was just wondering where that statement came from?

Surely there are countless factors that contribute to maturity. What about spiritual maturity? Emotional maturity? And does physical growth play a part also?

Maturing Adulthood

Adulthood is a physical state, maturity or "being an adult": is a mental state.

I agree with Tensuki that adulthood is something accomplished merely by living beyond your teenage years.

Maturity comes with experience and, I think, also largely by choice. People accomplish this, with varying degrees of success, at widely disparate ages; some people never do. I can think of several examples from my own circle of friends and acquaintances - those who are incredibly mature and those who won't ever be because they choose not to be.

Yes being an adult means you have lived for 18 years. So age wise you are an adult.

Maturity is a whole different ball of wax. My older brother was 39 when he died. He was never mature. He acted like most 15-16 year olds. It was interesting to see what he would do next. I have a 16 year old son now who is acting very mature. HE still has some things to learn in life but I know I can leave him at home and he will be able to keep the house clean, cook a meal for him and his younger brothers, get them to bed, get clothes and dishes washed. and possibly feed the pets. He still has trouble with the fact that dogs and cats do not feed themselves. smile.gif

There are a lot of immature adults out in this world. You can tell by the crime rates and watching them walk down the street or at the mall. In this Me Me Me world that we live in I feel that we are breeding immature people. But that is just my opinion.

Adulthood most certainly is just a number of years meaning now legaly at least you can make your own choices and live how you whish. To be a mature adult is different indeed. Wisdom and experience are the difference to have leanred from you child hood experience and apply it to the Adult world is a skill so many either do not have or just refuse to use. I look around my nieghbour hood and see cars full of 23 year old children age of matureity 12. Very sad at 16 I was done and I fully expect the same from my children also. After all if you have a 3000 lb car in your control you better be wise and knowlegable enough to use it properly.

I don't know. Yes, from the "official" view, adulthood and maturity are two different things. But in my mind, I like to see them as the same. Now, before you go and rip my head off, yes I know when you become an adult, that does not make you mature. But I like to believe that you do not become an adult until you have learn to mature. I have friends who are 25 now(I am 17). They act like a bunch of the other people who go to my school. Most of them couldn't run there own lives with out someone telling them how to do it. Now because of that, I don't consider them adults. I look at them and see them as friends of mine who are just older. Now I have a friend who is my age, yet she takes care of everyone in her family. Her mother, her father, she cleans and fixes up her house when it starts to fall apart. All that good stuff. Now, Her I consider an adult because she can take care of herself. Maturity is just something you gain from experience of living life. Some just gain enough before others.
