I Cant Hear You, You're A Woman

The power of a mans voice can control the world. We sit an listen as political presidents make speeches that leave us in a awe but for the life of me I cant focus when a lady lecturer talks for 45 minutes. Not that I'm attracted or distracted the slightest by the look of her or the idea of her being a woman, but rather the tone of her voice and the lack of confidence in her voice. The first 5 minutes go pretty smoothly how ever after that the mind over powers her polite, inferior voice. If we are to learn anything about the lessons of life then speak up! I have nothing against a woman's voice but confidence is key if anything is to be done. Whats the point of being an educator if half the lecture theater can't hear you. I can understand it to a class of 30 or so but a lecture hall of 450 wont be as participating. Great woman leaders in the world waded hand and foot to be heard. If the woman who are teaching the future business people in the world cant be heard then how can her word be trusted. So speak up ladies, the willingness to learn is there, its the listening part we lacking in.

I will place a thought on this. Historically the lady of the house looked after the children. Often scoldings take place, to what extent does this effect the ability of those children as adults to listen to a female speaker? Could this be an underlying issue as well as the perception that a man has more authority?

Interesting. This is something it never happened to me. As a radio announcer back home people would be very silent in public when I spoke. I also have a pretty strong personality and tend to talk for everyone to hear me. Nope, no Caroline Ingalls here. wink.gif

I think you are a good representative of the characteristics that tatem is speaking of. A tone that reflects confidence and knowledge of the topic being presented.

Men can be just as bad if they do not have those traits. Also no monotone please!

I am very monotonal at times and I enjoy it. smile.gif

Yes I think that someone who speaks with authority whether it is a man or a woman and speaks in a clear tone that all can hear makes a much better impression on others. I have been to some lectures where a man and most times a woman will be speaking and you miss half of what they are talking about because their voice lacks that authority and they sound less sure of themselves. These type of speeches make me want to fall asleep.

Maybe the problem is not the woman, maybe it is that you subconsciously do not want to listen. There are many women who speak with confidence. It could be that you do not want to believe she is confident or you misinterpret her body language. Could be the women you are thinking of in this topic are discouraged by people who wont give them a chance and who don't think they is competent despite the fact that they has made it up to that podium in the first place. You are speaking of women as a whole, so please turn the attention to yourself and ask yourself if you are being fair.

Some people possess the highest level of certification in their area of study and still cannot relay or convey their knowledge onto others, whereas other people can relate to all audiences regarding a topic or task without having the slightest clue about what they are speaking of. How is this possible? Public speaking classes are a must for those of us who deliver political speeches and educational lectures. Others possess this naturally. Whatever the situation, I agree with you that you must build a certain level of confidence before delivering a speech or lecture to a massive audience, whether you are taught the skill or if your a natural

That is very true Lynette. For the topic poster to say that it is because she is a woman is absurd though.
